Maputo Special Reserve and Tembe Elephant Park now have a transfrontier park management committee to provide direction and guidance on the implementation of the two parks’ joint operational strategy.
The park management committee will also ensure appropriate consultation and the inclusion of relevant stakeholders for the effective joint management of the two reserves.
The committee consists of ecologists, law enforcement officers and community liaison officers from the two reserves, the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife transfrontier conservation area (TFCA) coordinator, the Maputo Special Reserve technical adviser and the Tembe Elephant Park co-management chairperson or his deputy.
The two parks’ joint operational strategy called for the formation of a park management committee, which was formally established in July.
Maputo Special Reserve and Tembe Elephant Park form the core area of Usuthu-Tembe-Futi, a sub-TFCA of the Lubombo TFCA.
The /Ai/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Greater Mapungubwe TFCA are also jointly managed by transfrontier park committees.
