Statement by Joaquim Chissano, Vice-Chairman of Peace Parks Foundation, on the Passing of Dr Luísa Dias Diogo

It is with profound sorrow and deep regret that Peace Parks Foundation received news of the passing of Dr Luísa Dias Diogo, a member of our Board of Directors.

Dr Diogo served the Republic of Mozambique with outstanding competence, integrity and a strong sense of State responsibility. She held the senior positions of Minister of Finance and Prime Minister in the two governments that I had the honour to lead as Head of State. Her public service career was marked by rigour, strategic vision and an unwavering commitment to the country’s economic and social development, earning her widespread respect and recognition nationally and internationally.

Within Peace Parks Foundation, an organisation she joined in 2025, Dr Diogo brought with her a rare and invaluable wealth of experience in governance and leadership at the highest level.

It was precisely this rich background, combined with her capacity for strategic reflection and deep understanding of public policy, that the Foundation had hoped to draw upon in shaping its thinking and direction on the major challenges of nature conservation and community well-being in the region and in the conservation areas under Peace Parks’ management.

Her passing represents a loss of profound impact for Peace Parks, depriving the organisation of an exceptional contribution at a particularly critical moment in its institutional journey.

At this time of mourning, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and all those who shared with her a life dedicated to public service and the common good.

Peace Parks Foundation will continue to honour the memory and legacy of Dr Diogo, whose life and work will remain a source of inspiration.

Message by Werner Myburgh, CEO of Peace Parks Foundation

“Dr Luísa Dias Diogo brought with her a lifetime of public service, wisdom and moral authority. While her time with Peace Parks was tragically short, we had been greatly looking forward to working alongside her and learning from her experience. Her loss extends far beyond Peace Parks, touching all those who valued her continued service to public life. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and to all who mourn her.”
