Mr André Kilian, executive director of the SA College for Tourism receiving the Mail & Guardian Investing in the Future Education Award from Ms Tracey Henry of Tshikululu Social Investments
On 1 November 2012 the SA College for Tourism won the Mail & Guardian Investing in the Future Education Award. This award is bestowed on projects and initiatives that demonstrate a company or organisation’s commitment to addressing the huge educational challenges facing South Africa, including outreach/ engagement in the area of basic and higher education.
With the slogan: People who put People First, the Investing in the Future awards are designed to heighten public, government and business awareness about corporate social investment. In conjunction with the Southern Africa Trust, the event incorporates the Drivers of Change awards. These awards celebrate companies, individuals, civil society and government projects across southern Africa that impact the lives of people living in poverty, through the development and implementation of effective public policies and strategies.
Mr André Kilian, executive director of the SA College for Tourism said: “It is a tremendous honour for the College to receive this award, on top of the BHP Billiton Achiever Award earlier this year. Being able to annually train 90 young women in hospitality skills and 16 young men in the traditional skill of tracking, thereby enabling them to have careers and socially uplift them and their families, is extremely rewarding. These awards crown that!” Mr Kilian also thanked the supporters of the College, who make it possible to train people from marginalised and poor communities.
Peace Parks Foundation CEO, Mr Werner Myburgh said: “Congratulations to the SA College for Tourism and thank you to the Mail & Guardian and to BHP Billiton for this recognition. Peace Parks Foundation has been a development partner of the College since its inception and I am sure other supporters will join me in saying that these awards are very well deserved.”
