Wide area surveillance system
Thanks to an agreement between Peace Parks Foundation, SANParks and the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with support from the players of the UK's Peoples Postcode Lottery, an innovative and customised wide-area radar surveillance and detection system, the Postcode Meerkat, was launched in Kruger National Park on 7 December 2016.
Unmanned aerial vehicles
The Rhino Protection Programme is also supporting unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) projects test programmes and currently a UAV team is deployed in Kruger National Park, while a further UAV team is supporting Ezemvelo operations. The CSIR developed an operational concept and test plan, against which the UAVs are evaluated. The evaluation aims to determine whether UAVs can add value to, amongst others, counter-poaching operations, and if so, under what operating conditions and in combination with what sensors and UAV platforms. The main focus is the functional performance of the UAV platforms and sensor systems.
