Signing the Memorandum of Understanding
On 17 August 2001 the Minister Environmental Affairs of Namibia, Minister Philemon Malima and his South African counterpart, Minister Valli Moosa, signed the Memorandum of Understanding towards the establishment of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Conservation Park. This 5 086 km? TFCP merges the Ai-Ais Hot Springs Game Park on the Namibian side, which incorporates the famous Fish River Canyon, with the South African Richtersveld National Park, which is owned by the Richtersveld communities but contractually managed by South African National Parks.
