SOUTHERN AFRICAN PEACE PARKS
Malawi / Zambia TFCA
Overview
The objectives of the memorandum of understanding that was signed on 13 August 2004 by the Malawi Minister of Information and Tourism, Hon. Dr Ken Lipenga MP, and Zambia's Minister of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Patrick K Kalifungwa MP are to:
- foster transnational collaboration and cooperation between Malawi and Zambia in implementing ecosystem and cultural resource management through the establishment of the proposed TFCAs;
- promote alliances in the management of biological and cultural resources and encourage social, economic and other partnerships among governments and stakeholders;
- enhance ecosystem integrity and natural ecological processes by harmonising wildlife management procedures across the international boundary and strive to remove artificial barriers that inhibit natural movement of wildlife;
- develop frameworks and strategies whereby neighbouring communities can participate in, and tangibly benefit from, the management and sustainable use of natural and cultural resources that occur within the proposed TFCAs; and
- promote cross-border tourism as a means of fostering regional socio-economic development.
