Zambia: Pilot Projects
The KAZA Zambia Integrated Development Plan, with the Zambian Wildlife Authority as lead agent and facilitated by PPF, identified 89 action projects in the target area . These were divided into the following pilot projects to be rolled out during the implementation phase: i) wildlife recovery areas, ii) human/wildlife conflict mitigation measures and iii) land use planning assistance to chiefdoms with significant wildlife habitat and numbers in their chiefdoms e.g. Moomba Chiefdom (Mulobezi GMA), Nyawa Chiefdom (Sichifulo GMA and the Mukuni Chiefdom (Proposed Mukuni GR). Joint planning exercises have been held with the various chiefs and their kutas with site visit to follow during the dry season to complete documents and plans that will assist the chiefdoms to unlock the ecotourism potential of their resources.
Wildlife recovery areas include the proposed Ngonye Falls National Park and Simalaha Floodplains. Sensitisation programmes are currently being rolled out in these areas to get the land owners on board and give them an opportunity to make recommendations and raise objections. The most appropriate mitigation measures are currently being investigated which might include enclave villages, elephant restraining lines and secure water sources in form of solar powered water pumps.
