PEACE PARKS PROGRAMMES

The programmes differ from the projects in that they encompass more than one peace park and rather include many, if not all southern Africa's TFCAs.  The Climate Change Programme, TFCA Veterinary Programme and Ecosystem Services are run by Peace Parks Foundation, whereas Boundless Southern Africa was launched and is run by nine southern African countries.  They all set out to achieve the best not only  for the region's TFCAs, but also for the partner countries and its people.

Community Development Project: Matutuine

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT: MATUTUINE

Peace Parks Foundation was requested to assist the Government of Mozambique in the implementation of the Government's community development strategy in the community areas adjacent to the Maputo Special Reserve (MSR). This project commenced on 1 October 2007. The Foundation appointed a community development technical advisor, Mr Tiago Nhazilo, to implement the project on the ground, with assistance from the Foundation's head office personnel and local NGO partner, the Foundation for Community Development.

The primary objective of the project is to:

  • Implement the participatory process regarding the implementation of the Transfrontier Conservation Area and tourism development project. This has to involve the active participation of all stakeholders, including local communities, private sector and government agencies as well as the transfer of information regarding the possible voluntary resettlement of affected communities; and,
  • Enabling access by organised local communities to a community enterprise fund to:
- manage community reserves, or
- to enter into joint venture partnerships in nature based tourism/conservation
  enterprises, or
- community owned and operated initiatives, or
- agricultural projects.

These would provide rural people with the skills and resources required to improve their income and increase their food security in a sustainable manner.
