PEACE PARKS PROGRAMMES
The programmes differ from the projects in that they encompass more than one peace park and rather include many, if not all southern Africa's TFCAs. The Climate Change Programme, TFCA Veterinary Programme and Ecosystem Services are run by Peace Parks Foundation, whereas Boundless Southern Africa was launched and is run by nine southern African countries. They all set out to achieve the best not only for the region's TFCAs, but also for the partner countries and its people.|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park
Fish River Bridge
The Fish River starts on the west of Kalkrand approximately 600 to 700 kilometres north of Noordoewer and it runs all the way to join with the Orange river, approximately 96 kilometres west of Noordoewer. Many years ago, before the road was proclaimed, a bridge was constructed by Rosh Pinah Sink Mine, half the width of the river at the location where the Fish River joins the Orange River. The rest of the crossing is filled with wearing coarse and filling. Once a year the river comes down in flood and destroys the filling, resulting in the closing down of this road for a period of between two to four continuous months.
The Regional Office of Roads Authority at Keetmanshoop (Namibia) is experiencing serious problems with this 155km of proclaimed road running along the Orange River on the Namibian side from Noordoewer to Rosh Pinah. This road also provides the necessary access to the pontoon at Sendelingsdrift connecting the Richtersveld in South Africa to the Ai-Ais National Park on the Namibian side.
Due to the flooding and consequent road closure, tourists are compelled to drive from Noordoewer via Keetmanshoop to Rosh Pinah resulting in a 720km detour, which in turn negatively influences the tourism activity in the area. The Roads Authority Keetmanshoop intends to construct a concrete structure to complete the crossing and will allow traffic to cross the river in the rainy season. This will ensure traffic flow all year round and in turn ensure the increase in the number of tourists visiting this region. A detailed investigation has already been done in 2004 and a consulting engineering firm has designed the structures. Funding is now sought for this project.
