SOUTHERN AFRICAN PEACE PARKS

Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park

Parks | something... [© 2009 Michael Viljoen]Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park straddles the borders of Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe and joins some of the most established wildlife areas in Southern Africa into a huge conservation area of 35 000km˛ (± the size of the Netherlands). This forms the core of the second-phase transfrontier conservation area (TFCA), measuring almost 100 000km˛ - the world's greatest animal kingdom.

The larger transfrontier conservation area will include Banhine and Zinave national parks, the Massingir and Corumana areas and interlinking regions in Mozambique, as well as various privately and state-owned conservation areas in South Africa and Zimbabwe bordering on the Transfrontier Park.

Significant progress has been made in turning the area into a tourist-friendly park, notably through animal translocations, infrastructure development, the construction of tourism facilities and the opening of the Giriyondo Access Facility to Kruger National Park.

Progress

Parks | something... [© 2009 Michael Viljoen]Major developments have taken place to boost tourism to the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. The most important of these was the opening of the Giriyondo access facility between Limpopo and Kruger National Parks on 16 August 2006.icon video View video clip This made Limpopo National Park's tourism facilities and wilderness trails more accessible. In total 4 600 animals have been translocated and many animals have also migrated from Kruger by themselves. To encourage this, as further 30km section of fence along the northern boundary between Kruger and Limpopo National Park was dropped. Peace Parks Foundation is assisting the Mozambican government in overseeing the development of the Limpopo National Park (LNP) - a project approved by the SADC member states and funded by KfW . icon video View video clip
